Chicken Little

This movie wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. Yes, i think it is still definitely for little children but i did get to laugh at a couple of scenes. Some scenes are boring though based on how some children in the theater started to cry or some started to run around.

Just like heaven

Im getting tired of writing on this blog. Still, i'll see what i will do about things to help you guys out with choosing a good movie to watch. Anyway, this is a pretty cool love story. Nice plot. Haven't seen one or read one like it before. ... Hmmm... maybe i'll just get trailers and put it on the site.... I digress. Anyway, it is worth watching. 4/5 rating for me.

Prime

I didnt like the ending. It may have a subtle message but for me, it was twisted and lame. The movie had some humorous moments but the ending really spoiled it for me. 1/5 rating.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This is amazing for a true story. The movie is not really that scary in the sense that the newer supposedly horror stories were but it was scary because it was true. It is a good story of how evil lurks today and that knowing that, you are presented with a choice on whether to sit still or change. 5/5 for me.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

All i want to say is that i want to get a hold of a Director's cut version of this movie. I guess the book is really too long to put in one movie. I wish they just made 2 movies of this book instead of cramming it all in just one. It was ok but they didnt show all the attempts of the other champions. They deleted some of the minor players of the story like the 2 house elves. The fight with the dragon is not what was in the book. It felt that a lot of things was abbreviated. I read the book so things were a little clear. My companion has not read the book and was lost in a lot of places. It was disappointing. I would rate it 2/5.

Flightplan

I had some apprehensions about watching this movie. The trailer seemed disappointing but i was mistaken. It was actually a really cool thriller. Up till the last minute, i didnt know what to believe. It is really worth watching. 5/5 for me.

Domino

This movie is actually more entertaining than what its trailer conveys. A supposedly true story of a female bounty hunter. It was action packed with a bit of nudity. It was a story of teenage angst and turmoil leads to a semi-controlled, destructive, thrill-seeking job dealing with the scum of LA. It was cool. The cinematography sucks a bit since it nearly made me dizzy at the start. The cinematographer was probably catering to the MTV crowd thinking that they had millisecond attention spans. Anyway, i say it is a 4/5 movie. Watch it after Four Brothers.

Waiting

Talk about a low budget movie. It seemed more of a sit com than a movie. There were only 2 locations, a restaurant and an apartment. Nothing fancy. Just a plain old resto and a plain old apartment. The story revolved around the people who worked in the restaurant. I dont really have anything else to say about it. Entertaining enough to get a 2/5 rating from me.

Four Brothers

This is a nice action movie with fistfights and gun play, lots of it. The story revolves around the death of an old lady who raised 4 adopted boys who couldnt get adopted anymore because of attitude problems. It is a little more of an exagerration of what would happen if you put too much testosterone in one place. It was a nice movie though. I would rate it 4/5.

The Legend of Zorro

Zorro was set in a time where California is joining the American Nation as an independent state, a group of europeans attempt to stop it but Zorro comes to save the day. However, behind the scenes, Zorro now has a son and wife. The kid, Adrian Alonso, who played the son is an amazing actor! He was funny and an amazing athlete. Zorro and Catherine Zeta-Jones (the wife) were as expected but the son of zorro was really cool and cute. It is worth watching a second time if only just to catch this kid. 5/5 for being entertaining, not deep, mind you, but very entertaining.

The Corpse Bride

The movie is macabre, twisted, and morbid. The plot is fairly simple but presented in the weird way Tim Burton always seems to do. I cant seem to emphasize the word twisted enough but it actually turned out not as bad as i thought. If you get past the horrid looking faces and the morbid death-after death theme, the ending will not be so bad. Actually, the ending was the only thing that made it moderately entertaining. I would rate it at 3/5. If you absolutely dont have anything else to watch then go for it.

Shark Boy and Lava Girl on 3D

This is without a doubt a kid's movie. The plot is definitely for children. Some actors are too cheesy. However, it is a rare experience to watch a movie in 3D. I found the free 3D glasses a bit dark, particularly the red part. It wasnt a bad experience though. I would rate the experience at 3/5.

Thursday, October 20, 2005

Luther

This movie was actually really good. Its an exclusive with Ayala cinemas. It was set in the 15th century Germany where Martin Luther fought against Rome to bring the Word of God closer to the people. He had to fight the strength of the influence of the Vatican and some people who twisted his words. As is said, it was pretty cool. 4.5/5 rating :)

Lord of War

Another Nicholas Cage flop. They attempted to make a movie that was entertaining and thuoght provoking. They ended up being halfway good at either. It was a story of a man who became the biggest arms dealer in the world. Yeah, lots of violence and sex but that was it. Lame plot. I rate it at 1/5.

Thursday, October 13, 2005

Dungeons & Dragons 2: The Elemental Might

This movie is pure fantasy. As a former player of AD&D, this rocks in adventure. The party of Champions on a quest to save the land is a pretty straightforward plot. Nice special effects and great looking costumes. The actors needs a bit more practice and study but its ok. 3/5 rating.

Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit

This is a cute clay animation of an inventor and his dog. Yeah, the dog is smarter than the inventor :) It is nothing spectacular. Something the kids will enjoy. What was great here was the short film of the Madagascar Penguins which was shown before the movie. They had a Christmas adventure which was so funny! Rico rocked! I probably would watch it again just for the penguins.

40 Year Old Virgin

This is a hilarious movie. Yeah it is a mushy love story in a way but more of a loser getting the better of the deal in the end movie. It was really fun to watch. 5/5 rating. I expected less based on the trailer but ended up getting more.

Thursday, October 06, 2005

A History of Violence

This movie was cool! It is a weird "what if" story about a family man who suddenly got into the spotlight when he fought some robbers in his diner. This opened a can of worms with some mob guys who thinks he is someone else. It seems to be the better of the 5 movies this week and i wasnt wrong.

Dark Water

This is the story of a Lady and her daughter, recently separated, finding a cheap apartment and discovering a startling secret in the apartment above. The ending was not what you expected but it was cool. A nice horror flick. 4/5 stars.

The Perfect Catch

It was as expected based on the trailer. A love story of a career girl and a school teacher/sports fanatic. It was funny and shallow but it was what it claimed. It was fun with funny moments. 3/5 stars.

The Blade of the Rose

This movie started out ok. The acting of the first girl you see (Thirteenth Master) is a little ... rather, very lacking. It was reminiscent of some Filipino actors in daytime tv. The kungfu scenes were great though. Nice moves and nice wire fights. The other girl (Blue bird) was really pretty and acted well enough. Again, a few characters that needed acting class with some failing in their attempt in comedy. Jackie Chan's special appearance and fight scene was cool. Overall, it was a bit of a disappointment. Had they made it a serious flick, it would have been better.

A Sound of Thunder

It was a very interesting Sci-fi action movie playing with the What-if of an abused time machine. The scenery was high tech but the blue screen effect was so obvious. The monsters were common. The effects werent so hot. The cars werent so interesting. Actually fell asleep a little in the middle. 3/5 stars.

Cinderella Man

This turned out to be a really nice movie than what i expected. It had drama but not too much and it had enough action, too. it was a really inspiring movie about a family man who was into boxing. It was worth the time. 4.5/5 stars in my book.

Monday, September 12, 2005

Red Eye

A nice suspense movie. It all revolves around a hotel manager, her father and a hotel guest. The trailer shows how this guy she kept bumping into turned out to be someone who is after her to do something. 4 out of 5.

Sunday, September 04, 2005

The Cave

Cool movie. A suspense action flick about monsters in a cave being mapped by some professional spelunkers. The plot is fairly simple. They found a cave, they explored it, got trapped, discovered the monsters and after a few deaths, got out.... with a twist ;) Its a nice movie to watch if youve seen Sky High.

The Dukes of Hazzard

I dont remember the TV show from way back when with a similar title. It was a little too red-neck for my taste. Yeah, Daisy, played by Jessica Simpson, is sexy in the movie but other than that and the car action, it was not really that good. I fell asleep in the middle.

Sky High

A teen flick about the son of 2 superheroes who got his powers late after enrolling in Sky High, a highschool for children of heroes. Its fun in a sci-fi fantasy sort of way. I like the effects and the concept. It is fun to watch. This is the first of the three new movies this week we watched and it was a good decision.

The Truth About Love

Another Jennifer Love Hewitt love story movie set in London. I like the accent. The story is about an adulterous husband getting caught by his wife when she tries to anonymously flirt with him. It was a nice movie. Maybe watching it in Gateway mall with noisy girls in the back seat saying stupid comments aloud messed up the experience for me. Jennifer looks gorgeous with long hair. The bollywood actor played the husband. I didnt like him. Anyway, its ok to watch if youve seen Valiant and The Longest Yard.

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

The Longest Yard

This is the second movie we watched today and it was a good decision. This movie is so hilarious. Adam Sandler and Chris Rock in one movie - need i say more? This is a story of a washed up Football player getting arrested and forced to fix up a team composed of Convicts to play against a team made up of the guards in the prison. The gay cheerleaders were really disconcerting. The other Convicts in the team were equally funny. If you were to watch only two movies this week, i say that this is one of the two you should watch and Valiant being the other.

Valiant

This is the first of two movies we watched today. It was very funny and entertaining. I enjoyed it but a kid would, too. It is a cartoon story of a pigeon joining the "armed forces" of britain and fighting in World War II along with humans. Their enemies, the falcons, their allies, the mice of france. The lines were funny as well as the characters. Of the four new movies this week, this is one you should watch.

Wednesday, August 17, 2005

Must Love Dogs

This movie is about some middle aged people dating and trying to get over divorces, separations and whatnot. A chick flick that is moderately amusing. I actually fell asleep in the middle. Its ok though. Looking forward to just watching the Skeleton Key.

Sunday, August 14, 2005

The Great Raid

This is a pretty cool war story about a group of 117 US Rangers attempting to rescue the Prisoners of War in the Cabanatuan POW Camp held by the Japanese. It was entirely filmed in the Philippines. Even featured some Filipino guerillas led by Cesar Montano as Captain something (I cant get the name those crazy americans keep mispronouncing). Anyway, it is a pretty cool movie. Cesar has a number of feature scenes. He had a good role. Hope we see more Filipinos in Hollywood movies. The good ones though, not the ones we would be ashamed to see on the silver screen.

Sunday, August 07, 2005

Crash

This movie is actually quite interesting once you get past the middle. It is a convoluted story of the lives of several people of different colors demonstrating the state of racism in Los Angeles. If you haven't been to LA then you might think that it might be an exaggeration but it is actually quite close to the truth. Good to watch if you've already seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Wednesday, August 03, 2005

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Yes, this is a remake (not a sequel) of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory formerly starred by Gene Wilder. It is different like how ponkan and california oranges are. I keep looking for the familiar songs, not there. Johnny Depp in this version is a psychotic chocolatier as compared to the more distinguished version of the old version. Must be because Tim Burton, the director, is as twisted. The movie was fun though. It had lots of hilarious moments. The squirrels rock. I dont know if it was just a budget cut or just the desire to use computer graphics but .... just wait for the oompah loompahs! ;)

Wedding Crashers

This is a very funny twisted love story about a couple of guys who crash weddings for fun and girls. They end up falling for some girls they meet in a wedding and that is where stuff begins to happen. Not really a chic movie so if youre a guy bringing your girlfriend, beware. Fun to watch though. Practically a B movie but not a waste of time and money.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

Stealth

This movie rocks. Jessica Biel is great. The technology is very interesting. Nice minor twists as regards the AI (artificial intelligence). The plot is not so deep but it was fun to watch. Great effects and expect lots of explosions. A must watch.

Thursday, July 21, 2005

The Island

This movie is a sci fi flick. The trailer needs much to be desired. The movie is actually more fun than what the trailer shows. It is a story of some secret clones escaping and trying to survive. The setting, which the trailer failed to say, is the year 2015. Bordering on a B movie but it still was fun to watch. i would rate it 4 stars. Perhaps that is why it is a hit in the states.

Friday, July 08, 2005

Fantastic Four

Great movie. It was pretty much in tune with the Comic book with high tech sci-fi effects thrown into the pot. It gave a good dose of action with a moderately good sci-fi plot. The effects, as i mentioned, were great. Its the only new movie for the week so we have no choice but to watch it.

Saturday, July 02, 2005

War of the Worlds

This is an action packed movie. Nice effects and graphics. Acting is so-so. The plot is great in building up suspense but the ending left me with two comments. These are "what the ?!?" and "doh!" It is worth watching and im sure you will feel the same way after. The experience is akin to watching a Twilight Zone episode.

Sunday, June 12, 2005

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

A must see! It was funny and the action was good. No wonder there is an issue going on with Brad and Angelina. Their chemistry is good. The funny twist is how the story revolves around their marriage. Really fun to watch.

Sunday, June 05, 2005

Sin City

The title descibes the MTRCB rating. Plenty of sex, some nudity. It is like a series of stories, 3 to be exact, all happening in the same city. Slightly intertwined. Nice story. Interesting cinema effects and use of color in a mostly black and white screen. Its a nice violent movie. Cool but not spectacular. The last movie to see from this week's lineup.

Thursday, June 02, 2005

A Lot Like Love

This is an amusing love story spanning 6 years. It was a pleasant boy meets girl flick. Quite liberal and reflective of California values which does not necessarily mean good. Still, it was a pleasant movie. Fun to watch with a significant other.

Shutter

This movie is a story of a guy in Bangkok. The dialogues are in Bahasa (i think) and subtitled in english and japanese. A thriller with a moderately good plot and good direction. Hope you guys dont mind my very vague entries since i do not want to reveal anything that will spoil your experience when you watch the movie. It uses real ghost pictures. Nice to watch but you can do without it.

Monday, May 30, 2005

Madagascar

A humorous cartoon! Really liked it. The tune sang by the lemur is catchy. The lines are hilarious. A must see for kids and adults alike. Great choice of voice talents.

Unleashed

Simple plot. Interesting choice of location and actors. Jet Lee's moves are ... basic. Not as entertaining as Jackie Chan. Still, the movie was ok. You can go without watching it.

Star Wars Episode III

Hmmmmm..... Nothing to say but its star wars and i like it. Finally it is complete. I really had to go pee while in the movie but i didnt want to miss anything so i held it in. I like the effects which is basically what one is after when you watch star wars. I have heard a lot of comments about their acting. I just didnt care about how they emoted. Maybe they had too much of Anakin crying but nuff about that. Now i want to get all 6 movies and watch them back to back ;)

Monday, May 02, 2005

Sahara

This is a fun action movie about treasures, a plague and industrial disasters. Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) is the adventurer in search of a legendary iron battleship, Doctor Eva Rojas (Penelope Cruz) is the WHO representative investigating the plague affecting some african villages and Steve Zahn plays the sidekick of Dirk Pitt. In my opinion, Steve Zahn should have gotten equal billing because he did quite a bit of the work and was more fun to watch. 3/5 ratings :) You can go without watching this but if you do, expect some fun :) not a total waste of money.

Saturday, April 30, 2005

Finding Neverland

There were more than a handful of teary eyes when the movie ended. It was funny and heart-warming. The child who played Peter, Freddie Highmore, deserves an award. It has a great story and i liked Johnny Dep in this one (this as compared to the trailers i see with Willy Wonka). 5 stars. You have to see this.

XXX2

Cool movie. Just as much action as i anticipated but not as much gadgets. Some parts were quite humorous. Comments while leaving the movie house were "they didnt even say how vin diesel died," "parang kulang." I agree to the latter. The ending could have been better.

Monday, April 25, 2005

Ring of the Nibelungs

This is a nordic love story with adventures of Dragon-slaying and magic put in. It was a nice movie. The hero isnt that much of an actor. Reminded me of Arnold and Sylvester. The queen, a great nordic beauty, moves marvelously. Note that Iceland is supposed to be green and Greenland is the one full of ice and snow. Wish it ended differently but it was nice nonetheless.

Monday, March 28, 2005

Miss Congeniality 2

I liked this movie. It is a very good sequel. Sandra Bullock is still one of the prettiest girls i know and quite funny. Here she starts out continuing her work but her fame is not helping. The FBI Director assigns her to be "the new face of the FBI" with a partner/bodyguard that has an attitude problem. The partner, whoever she is, needs acting lessons in my opinion. Anyway, in the middle of it all, her Ms. America friend gets kidnapped and the story goes on from there. Again, its a great movie that you should watch. Stay for the bloopers at the end of the movie ;)

The Pacifier

This movie is totally entertaining. 5/5. My companion said that there were times when Vin Diesel would be overacting but i didnt see it. I was just enjoying the funny lines and antics. Dont expect earth shaking theories and deep sentiments. It is just plain comedy. The trailers are very misleading. The things you expected based on the trailer are not how it is in the movie but it didnt make it bad. You should watch it.

Robots

Amazing graphics! Really funny lines. Really love Robin Williams. His mark was unmistakable. A must see if you have kids or just want to laugh. The story revolves around Young Copperbottom and his journey to his dream. In the city, he meets people, a problem and some bad guys. I give it a 5/5 rating. You must see this. :)

Monday, March 14, 2005

Cursed

We were hesitating when we decided to watch this movie. I thought it was a sci-fi horror flick. To our surprise, it was a teen meets werewolf movie. Cristina Ricci played a very interesting role. It wasnt very full of substance but it was entertaining. It is good enough to watch if you dont have anything else to watch. I would rate it a 3/5.

Sunday, March 13, 2005

Hostage

This movie is a story of, as the trailer shows, 3 teen thugs trying to rob a house and ending up with more than they bargained for. The show has a lot of twists and it was generally what we expected from a movie entitled Hostage with Bruce Willis in it. He did pretty well. It was fun and didn't get boring. The ending didnt leave us wanting for more. The opening credit sequence was actually cool so watch out for it. I'll rate this a 4/5 movie.

Final Cut

Watched final cut last night. Robin Williams is great. The story is quite interesting. This is a sci-fi what-if movie. The premise is what if there exists an implant attached to a baby's brain which will record everything it sees and hears. How will it affect the person after he or she is told that at the end of his/her life, someone will see everything that happened. The problem with the movie is the ending. It could have been much better rather than the senseless way thay did it now.

Wednesday, March 09, 2005

The Aviator

This movie is have-to-go-to-the-bathroom too long but you would want to go back. It wasnt fabulous but it was entertaining. It is the story on the life of aviation pioneer Howard Hughes played by Leonardo di Caprio. Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous in this movie as she plays Eva Gardner. I would say go watch it if you have nothing else to watch.

Son of the Mask

Im glad Jamie Kennedy took over the lead role. Again, i dont like Jim Carrey. It was a fun movie with nice special effects. I never watched The Mask (why? because of Jim Carrey thats why) but this movie is supposed to be a sequel to that. The baby is cute and the lines were funny (it should be since its supposed to be a comedy). 4 stars.

Jamie Kennedy plays an aspiring animator whose dog finds the Mask of Loki, God of Mischief. In a holloween party, he wears the mask, becomes a hit at work and fathers a baby boy with his wife. That is where the entire story begins.

Lemony Snickets' A Series of Unfortunate Events

My date liked it. In a scale of 1 to 5, i would rate it a 3. It was interesting but it would have been better with a more fulfilling ending and a different antagonist. I really really dislike Jim Carrey. I find him too much of a ham. The story is simple. The cinematography is nice. The costumes were unique. Still hate Jim Carrey.

This is the story of the newly orphaned Bauedelaires, Violet (Browning), Klaus (Aiken) and Sunny. In their search for a new home, they encounter a series of family friends, relatives and .. occurrences.

We went to this movie just to waste time while waiting for my family to arrive. It was exactly that, a waste of time. This english-subtitled japanese movie was incredibly horrid. True we entered in the middle of the movie but after a few minutes, we knew why people were leaving as we were entering. It was scaring people just by sheer surprise nothing more. I was wondering what the heck they were thinking when they made this movie.

Hitch and Million Dollar Baby

In one day we watched both movies. It wasnt such a bad idea but it would have been nice to bask in the mood of Hitch for a while without having Million dollar baby eclipse it.

Hitch is another Will Smith hit. It was so hilarious. A great feel good movie. There really isnt much to say given that the plot is simple yet new. The lines are memorable. Will Smith plays a Date Doctor who helps out regular guys get noticed by the girls they like. He does well till he meets the cynic journalist Eva Mendes. I plan to get the DVD if that says something about how much i like the movie.

Million dollar baby is a nice movie. A drama. The awards it received was .. in a way... deserved but Hitch was too much fun for me to enjoy MDB that much. It had its entertainment value though. Clint Eastwood plays a boxing coach and manager who gets asked by Hillary Swank to teach her how to box.

Now why did i ever think of doing this movie blog thing? I'm not one of those i-hate-everything critics nor am i one who would risk spoiling someone's fun by revealing too much of the plot or twists (dont you just hate that when people talk too much?).

Phantom of the Opera

I haven't seen the play but i've heard the soundtrack. The movie was faithful to the music. However, it reminded me of a dubbed chinese movie where the sound does not seem to coincide with the picture. It wasnt as if the actor was saying mouthing different words but the expression on the actors' faces and the intensity of certain parts of the songs does not jive. Still it was a 4 star movie for me. Loved the music. Minnie Driver and Emmy Rossum were great. The male leads werepassable.

Minnie Driver plays the obnoxious diva who thinks too much of herself. Emmy Rossum plays the ballerina who suddenly got the chance to play the lead when the diva throws a fit. Everything follows from there.

Check out the cinematography and the costumes. This movie is worth watching at least once.

Once upon a time...

Here begins a new blog. This was born out of my frustration in finding a good website where i can get movie information in theaters around the metro. A website goes with this. The url is http://movie.web.ph. Let's see what this leads to :)
